Important Requirements
To terminate your contract with your health insurance, all outstanding premium payments must be settled. The cancellation only becomes effective once you submit a confirmation of your new insurance contract to the previous insurer.
If you do not conclude a new mandatory health insurance on time, you will automatically remain with your previous health insurance.
What is the cancellation period for mandatory health insurance?
Annual Cancellation
Swiss health insurances revise their premiums annually. Your insurance provider is obligated to inform you by the end of October at the latest whether and how the premiums will change in the following year.
Deadline: Submit cancellation by November 30th to switch providers on January 1st
Mid-Year Cancellation
If you have a basic insurance with a standard franchise of 300 Swiss Francs, it's also possible to cancel by the end of June with a three-month cancellation period.
Deadline: Submit cancellation by March 31st to cancel by June 30th
Canceling Supplementary Insurance: Deadlines and Dates
You have the option to terminate your supplementary insurances separately from the basic insurance. Typically, a three-month cancellation period until the end of the year is required, meaning your cancellation should be present by September 30th to become effective on December 31st.
Standard Period
Submit by September 30th for cancellation on December 31st
Premium Increase
Shortened period of one month when contributions increase
Important: Cancellation conditions may vary by insurer. Some providers might require a six-month instead of a three-month period. Details can be found in your insurance contract.
Before Canceling Supplementary Insurance
Before concluding a voluntary supplementary insurance, a health check may be required. There's a chance you might not be accepted into the desired supplementary insurance.
Therefore, you should only cancel your current supplementary insurance once it's certain that you will be accepted into the new insurance.
